Lots of things about 2021 feel “fresh”. Maybe it’s finally getting out of the chaos that was 2020 to get into NEW chaos of 2021! Maybe it’s the fact that we’re getting a massive winter system so everything (even Texas) is covered in snow. For me, part of it is that I just entered a new decade in my life. And, for the second time in my life, on Ash Wednesday.
Unlike the last time my birthday was on Ash Wednesday, this time I am not:
- Turning 8
- In Catholic school
- Even a practicing Catholic
- Going to give up something that gives me pleasure
You see, part of the whole ~Catholic~ thing is giving up something for Lent. A popular one for kids is giving up sweets (which is why 8 year old Chelsea came home with a tray full of cupcakes that she sadly could not eat due to ALSO giving up sweets). A complete religion one is meat on Fridays, hence the overabundance of fast food fish sandwiches from February till April.
For the past oh… 15ish years, I haven’t given up anything for Lent, and I don’t fully plan on it now. However, I thought it was an interesting coincidence that such a monumental birthday fell on the same day that I grew up giving things up for 40 non-Sunday days and nights (although I didn’t learn about the Sunday loophole until I was well into my 20s). So, in the spirit of the season I will be working on giving up and ridding myself/my life of a few things!
Things I’d like to give up in my 30s
- Doubting and/or downplaying my abilities.
- Letting what I think others think of me get in the way of doing what I want.
- Body shame.
- Mindless spending (me @ me: you don’t need more fabric PLEASE sew what you have).
To seal it, I’m going to start taking my skin care routine seriously, in lieu of having ash rubbed on my forehead.
